Look for Forecast Updates in the Comments.
This one is from early Thursday.
Thursday, January 20, 2011, 5:45 AM
The forecast appears to be pretty much on track. Snow has begun in northwest Arkansas. Mountain Home had a brief period of freezing rain before a changeover to snow.
On radar today, echoes will probably appear for about 2 to 3 hours before precipitation reaches the ground in any given area. This will be because precipitation will initially evaporate before reaching the ground.
Many areas will see a brief period of rain, freezing rain, and/or sleet before precipitation changes over to snow.
Depending on precipitation trends as the day goes along, it is conceivable that another row of counties farther south could be added to the Winter Weather Advisory later today. This would include Hot Spring, Grant, Jefferson, and Arkansas counties
The first attached map shows approximate beginning and ending times for today's precipitation. Note that snow will begin diminishing from the northwest this afternoon. All significant precipitation will exit the southeast corner of the state this evening.
Low temperatures tonight will drop into the single digits in northwest Arkansas and range up to the mid 20s in the southeast. Thus, any moisture left on roadways will freeze overnight.
If there are any significant changes to the forecast, I will issue an update later today.
It still looks as though there will be another round of winter weather in the Sunday/Monday time frame, especially in northern Arkansas.
