Folks you need to know about a few of my favorite websites. You already know
MySaline.com is my absolute favorite because of all the wonderful locals visiting there – nearly 1,200 now. But there are others. I visit them often, but not necessarily daily. They are good for a giggle or some great info. Here we go…
Woot.com sells various electronics and geek paraphernalia. MP3 players, hi-tech vacuum cleaners, usb turntables, electric lawn mowers, and more. They always start the sale at midnight. They sell just one item per day, whether or not they sell out.
On a random day, they have what’s called a “Wootoff.” They still start at midnight, but they sell each item until the stock is gone, then they keep putting up another item when one sells out. This creates a frenzy among the regular “Wooters.” Many will call in sick to work and/or stay up all night waiting for the next great deal on computer ram or rechargeable toothbrushes.
There are some great parts of Woot besides the sale though.
1. The goofy stories they make up about the products. It’s not so much a product description as it is a comedy vignette. Short stories that range in value from “waht-wahhh” to “screen-spewing snort-larious.”
2. The blog. All through the sale, people are talking smack, either chiding the people buying stuff or touting how good or lame the sale is. Some people are brutal, saying things like "This is a pile of [fill in a “pile” word]. Avoid like the plague!" Some people are just bragging that they bought the first one.
3. Photoshop contests. There's a daily image editing contest based on some asinine theme. People are really serious about being funny here. Hilarity typically ensues. There are three top prizes for the best entries and a “monkey prize” is reserved for the dumbest – but sometimes still really funny – entry.
4. The is the rarest, and most special part of Woot: The "Bag-o-Crap." They show a picture of a wrinkled brown bag with a question mark on it. They actually sell this. It goes like on-fire cakes. You can order one, two or three Bags-o-Crap. It might be a bluetooth headset. It might be just some kind of adapter or a keychain. One time, an amazed buyer got a 42-inch high-definition television.
In short, Woot.com is a store that entertains you. And with shipping set at five dollars no matter what, how can you resist staying up to check it out?
Need a soundtrack to your surfing, but don’t have anything cool on your computer? Check out
Imeem.com. Go to the search blank or just browse around, but you can find just about any recording artist. Listen to separate tracks or make a playlist. I made a list of Christmas songs and embedded the player on MySaline last December. I made a list of worship songs and embedded them on the MySaline’s Bible Study page.
Now you dialup people are already smirking, and you’re right. You’ll likely need a high-speed Internet connection for Imeem. Let’s move on to something everyone can enjoy.
Deals! There is a collection of sites with the word “deal” in the url. The main site is Dealnews.com. It does what it’s called. It gives you news on what deals you can get. They pick a deal of the day and also show good deals in several categories. If your inbox isn’t already overloaded like mine, you can be lazy and sign up for the deals to come to you in an email every day.
Another of the “deal” sites is
Dealcam.com. I get a new digital camera about every 18 months to a year, and I want the best I can buy for the least amount of money. It used to be pretty difficult to research such a thing. This site lets you pick from maker, megapixels, zoom, memory type, screen size, weight and price. If all that isn’t enough, you can also add key words. Click search and Dealcam shows you all the cameras available at any online store with those set attributes, sorted by price. I know, sweet, right?
Their other sites are
Dealram.com, which helps you find inexpensive memory cards, flash drives, and more.
Dealink.com sorts out the deals on printer ink. There are more but lastly, you know those little code boxes you see when you get to the purchase page of an online store? You could get a better deal if you just knew the code.
Dealcoupon.com, baby!
