Public schools didn't exist back in the Arkansas hills 120 years ago. School attendance wasn't compulsory until 1909. My step-grandfather Halbrook's first cousin, William Erwin "Uncle Willy" Halbrook was an early advocate of education in the rural areas of the northwest Arkansas hills. He was often opposed by city businessmen who felt that tax money was wasted on the education of farm children. I went over to photograph the remains of the Fryer Bridge yesterday and found that the recent flood had washed it about 30 - 50 feet downstream. Very few of the iron components are visible.
