Soooo... raise your hand if you knew that the author of True Grit lives in Little Rock. Yeah, I'm a literary dunce. Just cruising my Facebook last night and ran across some of my friends talking about chance meetings with some cat named Charlie Portis. I totally had to look it up. Their ramblings about Portis not digging the spotlight so much are confirmed in this December piece in the Wall Street Journal.

Went to eat crawfish at Faded Rose and had the pleasure of sitting next to Charlie Portis. We talked about crappie fishen on Cache River, a trip he took to San Fransico and Mike Anderson coming back to Arkansas . We talked about everything except the fact he wrote True Grit !
Crawfish was awesome too .

Brent Hendrix I was concentrating on my tray of food and just kind of looked up to see a man there, but not looking at his face. The cashier told me.

Nathan Christian Greg Charlie used to hang out at Cajun's a lot and I had very similar experiences with him. As down to earth as a human can be!

Morgan P. Knight When I worked at Cajun's Wharf as a barback, circa 1984-87, Charles Portis used to come in as a customer . He always came in at opening, about 4:30 in the afternoon, and left after 2 drinks (CC & water?) around 5:30. He was always very quiet and would only speak to the bartender Scott Farqhuar if he asked a question. We never spoke about any of his work (he would have walked out).

Morgan P. Knight Interesting guy, the conversations between he and Scott were always about cars, engines, etc.

Morgan P. Knight Yes, that was him. He has a routine. Was driving an rust colored Bronco ('78?) with a white top at the time I met him. He kept life very simple and would completely dismiss you or disappear if you brought up his work.
