Trick-or-Treating is still fun! When you're the grown-up, it's not about the candy anymore - okay, it's a little bit about the candy - but it's mostly about the fun of dressing up and playing the character and watching the kids experience it all. It's great seeing them get the hang of it after a couple of houses and then take off running to the next house to see what other goodies they'll get. The giggles and the screams and getting to share your own childhood memories with them as you walk. Hearing your parents' voices in your head as you say, "Just the houses with the porch light on," or, "Watch for cars - they may not be watching for you!"
I love their explanation of the costumes too. "I'm a dead cheerleader!" Said one neighbor girl with excitement. They're so cute at this age, with fake blood smeared all over their neck and arms.
I took my daughter and two other girls to several houses, then we went inside at my parents' house to warm up and survey the goods. The girls all dumped their candy on the table and picked through to separate the dislikes from the likes and make a few trades. My mother graciously volunteered to take whatever nobody else wanted. Everything was settled and I loaded them in the car to head back to the other end of the neighborhood and drop off the two extra girls. We didn't get far before I was sandwiched between a very patient dad on a four-wheeler and a psycho clown on a hay trailer. It was nothing but brake-tapping from there, and two more blocks up the street. I dropped the girls off and they thanked me for taking them out - the sweeties. Alone with my daughter in the car, I ask, "Did you have fun tonight?"
"Yeah," she mumbled across a cherry DumDum.
Almost forgot! The best house was one with a big side yard. They had 7 or 8 scarecrow zombies stood up in two rows. You had to go between the rows to get to the candy. This is beginning to sound like a video game. After you get the candy, you head back and one of the zombies is alive and jumps out at you! Aaaaasaaaaa!!!! And a little cowboy went running and screaming into the street. Not sure if he held onto his candy or his bladder. Poor feller. It was still kinda funny though.
